Whats a good substitute for captain morgan?
Ive been drinking Captain Morgan for a while now and wanted to know what other types of Rum or whiskey or even Vodka’s are pretty good? I know I like Ron diaz and Karkov (even tho its cheap and everyone pukes of it :P) And I like many others but just wanna hear some of your favorites.
My favorite whisky is Canadian LTD… Its pretty strong but goes down smooth.
And then there is "Gentleman Jack" which is jack daniels but way smoother and more on the expensive side…. it gets you FU*$%D up.
I hate vodka, and captain is the only really good rum in my book.

Captain Morgan is to Rum what Ponderosa is to steak houses.
This year treat yourself to some good rum. These are some names to look for.

If you like CM and will be mixing but are on a budget, get Admiral Nelson’s.
If you’re drinking for taste, I agree with Jonny and recommend Flor de Cana.

Aromas of sherry and berries and a light nutty butteriness; smooth mouthfeel, with baked pineapple, honey and orange notes; smooth moderate finish.

Rum is a great alcohol right now becuase one can obtain some very high quality sipping rums at a price lower than fine Scotch or Bourbon. In terms of a general spiced rum, there is: Kilo Kai, VooDoo, Montecristo Spiced, Lamb’s Spiced Rum that are all worth a try. I love Lamb’s as it’s a bit more complex than the others.
My absolute favorite rum is Flor de Cana Centenario 21. It’s from Nicaragua and aged 15 years. I think it can hold it’s own against some of the similarly aged Scotch of Bourbon batches. I’ve found bottles of this stuff or as low as $40. Which is pretty good considering a bottle of 15 year Scotch can get pretty expensive. This is a sipping rum, not to be mixed. In fact, if you’re thinking of branching out past the Captain, think about buying things that are meant to be sipped rather than shot.
In terms of Scotch, my absolute favorite is The Balvenie. Their regular 10 year is great and not too pricey. They do have some interesting old batches, such as the 12 year doublewood that gets an additional aging in sherry casks and a 21 year old portwood aged. Those can get kind of pricey though. I would say start with a 10 year Scotch and see what you like.
I’m not a huge bourbon guy, but I do like Bookers. I hear Pappy Van Winkle is the greatest Bourbon on Earth, but I haven’t seen it sold anywhere. Anything small batch will usually be a good and complex drink.
Aged alcohols differ greatly among the distillers. If you find something you like, that’s great. But there is a lot of trial an error in getting something that makes your mouth happy. It took me a while to discover that Balvenie is my top Scotch. It also took me a long time to discover Flor de Cana. My most successful ventures usually involved a bar that socked high-end stuff. I would save some cash and line up three Scotch varieties and try them back to back. Eventually I got what I wanted, but I tasted some things I hated along the way. Don’t be discouraged when you taste something awful.
